Where CBN comes from

CBN has the strangest origin story in the plant: it isn't really grown — it's aged. When THC is exposed to time, air, and light, it slowly degrades into CBN. (This is why decades-old cannabis found in archaeology digs is rich in CBN — and why CBN was actually the first cannabinoid ever isolated, back in the 1890s.) Modern producers make it deliberately and cleanly, and in finished products like ours it arrives fully converted and THC-free: our PM solution still tests non-detect for THC.

Don't let the family tree worry you: CBN is not meaningfully intoxicating at the servings found in wellness products. It will not get you high. What it has instead is the strongest "time of day" identity of any cannabinoid.

Why people reach for CBN at night

Somewhere along the way, CBN picked up the nickname "the sleepy cannabinoid." We'd phrase it more carefully — and more honestly. Researchers are actively studying CBN in the context of rest and nighttime routines, and that work is still young; the reputation currently runs ahead of the settled evidence, and you deserve to know that.

But the reputation came from somewhere: night after night of people reporting the same thing. Not sedation, not a knockout — more like the volume of the day turning down. "It's easier to put the phone away." "I stopped rehearsing tomorrow at 11pm." People reach for CBN at night the way they reach for dim lights and a warm shower: as a signal, a ritual, a downshift. Paired with CBD — as in our PM "Relax" CBD:CBN Oral Solution ($30) — it's the closing bookend of the day our AM opens.

Using CBN well

  • Give it a runway. Take an oral serving about an hour before you'd like to be winding down — it's a gradual compound, not a switch.
  • Pair it with a routine. CBN works best as part of a signal: lights down, screens away, serving taken. The ritual and the cannabinoid reinforce each other.
  • Stay consistent. Like CBD, people tend to report more in week two than night one. One pre-dosed serving, same time, several nights — then judge.
  • Not a treatment. If sleep is a genuine medical struggle, that's a doctor conversation. We'll never suggest otherwise.
